Is it possible to have a normal delivery with Twins? - Dr. Shefali Tyagi So you are carrying twins and you are very excited that how it is going to be and how the pregnancy will progress and how the delivery will be , whether you can have a normal delivery after twins depends first on the type of twins that you are carrying. There are different types of twins which can be a dichorionic diamniotic twin or a monochorionic diamniotic twin or a monochorionic monoamniotic twin. The third type called MCM, that is monochorionic monoamniotic the normal delivery is not possible. In that case the say that by 34 weeks or so you should deliver these babies because the risk to these babies after 34 week is really high but as far as the other two are concerned the best chances of having a vaginal delivery is there with DCDA, that is dichorionic diamniotic. That is the commonest type of twins that we encounter. In this case also it depends on the gestation that you are encountering because prematurity is extremely common in twins. If you are having discharge at 28 weeks and the doctor is going to deliver your babies, at 28 weeks it might be difficult to offer vaginal delivery because of the prematurity. If your babies are near to term or late preterm plus if their head is down the n the chances of normal delivery is definitely there but in that case we want the first baby to be head down so that the complications will be less. Even if the second baby is not head down, can be rotated after the birth of the first baby. So normal delivery is very much possible if the type of twins is DCDA and closer to term with the first baby head down. But I have also seen cases where the first baby was delivered vaginally and the second baby, suddenly the cord came down or the second baby had too much of fetal distress and had to be taken for C section to be deliver the second baby. So one baby was delivered be normal, the second baby was delivered by C section. So these decision have to be taken by your doctor with your consent depending on at what gestation you are going to deliver and what is the presentation of your baby.
