Merkel optimistic Brexit deal acceptable to UK

Merkel optimistic Brexit deal acceptable to UK (12 Nov 2019) German Chancellor Angela Merkel is optimistic that Britain would be able to approve a withdrawal deal that would be "be good for all of us."

But Merkel, speaking at a conference in Berlin, cautioned that Brexit was a "painful outcome" that would make Britain a third country "basically living on our doorstep as a competitor," and placing "additional pressure" on the EU and Britain itself.

Merkel also addressed climate change, saying she supported incoming European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her efforts to make Europe the first climate neutral continent.

"(A continent) that demonstrates how to achieve the future way of doing business in terms of technology and innovation," Merkel added.

Merkel spoke in Berlin during the annual conference of Germany's main employers' association (BDA).
