MOSCOW - The Kremlin spoke after US media reported that President Vladimir Putin rejected Iran's request to supply the S-400 missile defense system. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov doubted the report.

US media, Bloomberg, reported on Thursday that Tehran was proposing to purchase the sophisticated Russian defense weapon. The report citing a Russian source stated that Mr Putin's request was rejected on the grounds that it would add to tensions in the Middle East.

"I have no information like that," Peskov told reporters on Friday. He requested careful verification of such reports.

"We must be very careful about information," said Peskov.

The Sputnik news agency, citing Russian government sources, reported that Tehran and Moscow did not currently discuss the supply of the S-400 missile defense system to Iran.

The Bloomberg report came after US-Iran tensions escalated earlier this month, when Washington imposed additional sanctions on Tehran and sent USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Combat Group, a number of B-52 bombers and Patriot interceptor missiles to the Middle East. Sanctions were imposed after last year President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, the United States, Russia, France, Britain, Germany and China.

The US described the steps to deploy the war equipment as an effort to respond to threats originating from Iran. According to US intelligence, Tehran's military and its proxies are planning attacks on US forces and interests in the Middle East.

However, Iran has denied the allegations and considered it false intelligence. Tehran has given 60 days to the five signatories of the remaining nuclear agreements to guarantee the protection of Iran's interests. If not, Tehran will continue to enrich uranium at a higher level.
