PRUNING a large Ash tree (how to prune big trees)

PRUNING a large Ash tree (how to prune big trees) We pruned this ash tree in The Netherlands. The tree was in bad shape and is dying. Probably Ash Dieback (or Chalara disease). Particularly visable by much dead brenches on the outside of the canopy. That's why this heavy prune will extend it's lifetime by a little, and prevents dead brenches falling on shed or roof.

Customer requested a crown/canopy reduction, remove dead wood and remove the watersprouts off the main stem.

The customer is aware the tree is dying, but wanted the tree as large as possible, as safe as possible. This way they can enjoy this huge ash tree for a couple of more years.

Using climbing spurs is almost never necessary, but I liked wearing them in this tree. In this case it helped me to remove the large dead limb in pieces. I would never recommend using/wearing climbing spurs while pruning healthy trees. The spikes make holes wich damage the bark (= cambium, this provides the tree of food/fluids, life of the tree goes through the cambium). Only use them with removals!
