Consider this in appreciation (also out of curiousity) an extra showcase on the great potential recent update of Sonic Boll 1.9.2. This is my take on how to unlock the hidden characters (aka. all characters to say).
The Kid: Start on 1-1. Get a mushroom, then run back to the start but keep running. When the screen scrolls left, you'll see a tree, have any of the apples land on you & a "Game Over" screen will appear. Either that, or an error screen like this might occur, one way or another, doing it right will unlock The Kid regardless.
Ashura: Start on 1-2. Make your way through the level normally, once reaching the end of the level, you would usually go over the end pipe to access the Warp Zone. However, you must go underneath the pipe and go down the closest pipe from the Warp Zone (being #4), doing so will bring you to an alternate set of levels (the negative zone I think).
