18.11.2019 UK has 'huge responsibilities to Gibraltar', says Lord Chris Patten

Former Conservative cabinet minister Lord Chris Patten spoke about Hong Kong, Brexit and Gibraltar at his sold-out talk during the Gibraltar International Literary Festival this weekend.

Delivering the Governor's Lecture at the Convent, Lord Patten said outside the EU, the "UK will face the same problems as Europe but without the comfort of 27 other countries”, going on to tell GBC the UK has “huge responsibilities” to Gibraltar.

The former Governor of Hong Kong said the situation there is a reminder of how close civilisation can come to chaos.

GBC's Christina Cortes spoke to him, and first asked whether Britain could have done anything to prevent what is happening now by granting Hong Kong any greater degree of self-determination.
