The animated films from Walt Disney Studios have become an institution of wholesome family entertainment. Generations of viewers have enjoyed Disney’s retellings of classic fairy tales, while new viewers have sat in rapt wonder at the adventures of newer characters.

One thread seems to run through dozens of these cinematic masterpieces: the main character lacks either one or both parents. Some of these parental absences can be attributed to the source material from which Disney adapted many of his classic films. In other cases, removing the parents came down to storytelling decisions by Disney and his team of writers, directors, and animators.
