To find the number of atoms in Al2(SO4)3 (Aluminum sulfate) we’ll add up the number of atoms for Al, S, and O. The small number after the element symbol is called the subscript and this tells us how many of that atom are in the compound. For example Al2 means there are two Aluminum atoms.
When there is no number after an element, as is the case with Sulfur (S), we assume there to be one atom of that element. For example, in Al2(SO4)3 we have only one S atom.
For AL2(SO4)3 there are a total of 17 atoms in the compound.
