THE RUNDOWN | Israel and Hezbollah just engaged in a minor skirmish on the Israel-Lebanon border, leaving many to wonder if things will escalate. What role does Iran play in leading up to this point? Former IDF Northern Command Commanding Officer Maj. Gen. Yossi Peled analyzes,

Story:

A tense calm returned to the Israeli-Lebanese border Sunday evening after a week of tensions with Hezbollah culminated in an exchange of fire that saw an Israeli military base struck by anti-tank missiles.

The Israeli military said it responded by firing around 100 artillery shells into its northern neighbor after refuting the Iranian-backed movement's claims that Israeli soldiers inside a struck military vehicle were killed and wounded by the missile attack.

By the evening, the United Nations peacekeeping force said calm had been restored on the border and it was working to investigate what it said was a serious incident "clearly directed at undermining stability in the area.”

“We need to maintain security along the Blue Line and exercise utmost restraint. General calm has been restored in the area and the parties have reassured me of their continued commitment to the cessation of hostilities in accordance with Resolution 1701,” said Major-General Del Col, mission head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

UN Chief Antonio Guterres said he was "seriously concerned" about the cross-border violence and called on Israel and Hezbollah to demonstrate "maximum restraint" to prevent further hostilities.

The brief exchange of fire ended without any reported injuries to either side, but tensions remain high in the region.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) closed off roads and ordered residents within a range of 2.5 miles from the northern border with Lebanon to open bomb shelters and be prepared to enter them should sirens sound.

Meeting with UNIFIL Commander Del Col, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi vowed that Israel was prepared to act to defend themselves:

“The IDF is prepared for a wide variety of scenarios. We will not accept neither attacks on our civilians or soldiers nor the precision guided missile manufacturing project on Lebanese soil.
