The reason medical cannabis is expensive in Australia currently is because there a lot of hurdles to producing it and getting it to our patients.
The black market or illicit market does not have these checks and balances around growing it in a safe environment and also then producing their products in a safe environment. The medicinal cannabis products are grown in a safe way where they're tracked, made sure they don't have any toxins or additives and then beyond that when they're produced they're tested as well, they go into a lab and tested to make sure they don't have any heavy metals, any toxins, any bacteria or yeast and mould, etc, making sure its a very safe product.
There's also duty's as well, such as import duties, taxes and the cost of bringing product from overseas whilst the Australian industry is still building up.
The price is coming down certainly and currently as this FAQ is playing we have a CBD product that is 11 cents per milligram which comes in under the black market which is on average 13 cents per milligram. For some products such as THC it is more expensive however for products such as CBD it is less expensive then the black market.
