Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara would "turn elsewhere" for fighter jets following Washington's decision to remove Turkey from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme amid tensions over Ankara's acceptance of Russia's S-400 missile defence system. Erdogan spoke at a meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the Turkish capital on Friday.

Erdogan assured that Washington's decision would not deter Ankara from meeting its military needs, saying, "Are you not giving us the F-35s? Okay, then excuse us but we will once again have to take measures on that matter as well and we will turn elsewhere."

According to the Turkish president, Turkey would start using Russia's S-400 air defence defence system in April 2020.

Turkey received the first parts of Russia's S-400 system earlier this month. According to the Russian defence ministry, the delivery of other parts of the missile system will take place in accordance with the contract and within the timeframe agreed by both sides.
