Safe pressure measurement in sanitary applications | Diaphragm pressure gauges in hygienic design The highest priority in the production of food and pharmaceuticals is safety. In sanitary applications, such as, for example, in the production of vaccines or baby food, the purity, quality and stability of the product must be ensured.
In pipelines, fermenters, bioreactors or vessels, the pressure needs to be indicated via easy-to-read pressure gauges. Pressures and vacuums must be monitored constantly during cleaning (CIP/SIP), sterilisation and testing.
The process reliability can be guaranteed through measuring instruments in hygienic design. In the following, we will introduce you to the most important instruments, the process risks and innovative solutions.

Diaphragm seal systems have long proven themselves as a standard. The diaphragm of the diaphragm seal transmits the pressure to the sensor element of the pressure gauge (video: Mechanical and electronic pressure measuring instruments can be combined with diaphragm seals to adapt the instrument for high temperatures, aggressive media or for easy cleanability.
Through carelessness such as rough handling, but also as a result of pressure spikes and overload, the sensitive diaphragm of the diaphragm seal can be damaged. If the diaphragm rupture is not detected in time or even if the transmission fluid flows into the process, this involves process risks. The consequences could cause great economic damage and even be fatal: contamination of medicines, destruction of entire batches or suspension of production.
With special WIKA pressure measuring instruments, a diaphragm rupture can be detected immediately. Diaphragm seal systems with built-in diaphragm monitoring or diaphragm pressure gauges can reliably monitor such processes.
Diaphragm pressure gauges: Here, the pressure is transmitted mechanically to the movement − this is done without any transmission fluid and thereby increases the process reliability (video: Because the diaphragm element is very robust, it is resilient to extreme process conditions as well as rough handling. Thus, diaphragm pressure gauges eliminate a large number of process risks in sanitary applications and increase the plant availability and the service life of the measuring instrument.

The solution: PG43SA series diaphragm pressure gauges are designed to meet the highest demands of the food and pharmaceutical industries. These pressure gauges fulfil the strict requirements of hygienic design and this is confirmed through 3-A and EHEDG certificates. Bioreactors, fermenters or buffer tanks can be autoclaved directly along with the measuring instruments. Dismounting them is not necessary, saving valuable time.

PG43SA-S diaphragm pressure gauge ( The pressure in mobile and high vessels, fermenters or bioreactors can be read off using the PG43SA-S diaphragm pressure gauge. It features a large display. Due to the radial connection, this model is also particularly well suited for connection to horizontal pipelines.

PG43SA-C diaphragm pressure gauge ( The compact PG43SA-C diaphragm pressure gauge with its patented design is ideal for mounting on vertical pipelines or small mobile vessels. The process connection is located at the rear of the case and enables space-saving installation.

PG43SA-D diaphragm pressure gauge ( The high-end model PG43SA-D version meets the highest safety requirements and can completely eliminate the risk of undiscovered diaphragm element ruptures. This is ensured through the integrated diaphragm element monitoring. Via an additional indication on the dial, the integrity of the diaphragm element can be checked with just one glance, not only before installation, but also during operation. A second barrier enables double security and guarantees that media cannot enter into the process or the environment. The process is therefore hermetically sealed in the event of a diaphragm element rupture. If the monitoring function is required for pressure measuring instruments with an electrical output signal, the diaphragm monitoring system with diaphragm seal ( is available for this purpose.

The PG43SA family transports mechanical pressure measurement to the state of the art. The diaphragm pressure gauges can always measure reliably and especially safely. Risks due to diaphragm ruptures can be eliminated and the process integrity ensured.
