Article 50 extension will need a purpose, says Barnier

Article 50 extension will need a purpose, says Barnier The European Union's Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier, has said the UK's request for a further extension to Article 50 needs to be accompanied by a legitimate purpose. At a press conference ahead of the European Council's meeting tomorrow to discuss the extension, Mr Barnier also said the length of the extension would need to be in line with the purpose.

Mr Barnier reiterated that the withdrawal agreement would not be re-opened, but welcomed the possibility of enhanced ambitions for a future relationship, such as membership of the Customs Union. He said a No Deal scenario would have to be a decision taken by the UK, and that it wouldn't be a decision taken by the EU.
